چکیده

In this paper, a new viscoelastic model is presented to describe the elastic and viscoelastic behaviors of ligaments and tendons during the preconditioning process. The model is formulated by accounting for the mechanical contribution of the main structures of ligaments and tendons, i. e., the collagen fibers, the proteoglycan-rich matrix and the coupling between the collagen fibers and the matrix. The coupling between the collagen fibers and the matrix is assumed to behave as the links binding the collagen fibers and the matrix together. According to the previous studies, the friction loss in ligaments and tendons plays a significant role on the stress softening and the decreasing of the hysteresis during preconditioning. Therefore, in this work, the links are assumed to gradually break during preconditioning and there will be no links breaking when the preconditioning is completed. Finally, the viscoelastic model can easily describe the stress softening and the decreasing of the hysteresis during preconditioning process. We believe that our model can provide a simple way to interpret the physical mechanism during the preconditioning process in ligaments and tendons.

A Nano-indentation Identification Technique for Viscoelastic Constitutive Characteristics of Periodontal Ligaments

Introduction: Nano-indentation has recently been employed as a powerful tool for determining the mechanical properties of biological tissues on nano and micro scales. A majority of soft biological tissues such as ligaments and tendons exhibit viscoelastic or time-dependent behaviors. The constitutive characterization of soft tissues is among very important subjects in clinical medicine and espe...

Introduction: Topographic anatomy of the tendons and ligaments in healthy cases provides a normal atlas to diagnose abnormalities. The aim of this study was to provide ultrasonography description of the palmar tendons and ligaments of the Anatoly donkey. Methods: The metacarpal regions of 6 healthy Anatoly donkeys were prepared for ultrasonography and divided to 6 levels (1a, 1b...

A Mathematical Approach for Describing Time-Dependent Poisson’s Ratios of Periodontal Ligaments

Periodontal ligament is a thin layer of soft tissue that connects root of a tooth to the surrounding alveolar bone. These ligaments play an important role in initiating tooth movement when loads are applied to teeth with orthodontic appliances. The majority of such soft tissues exhibit as viscoelastic bodies or have a time-dependent behavior. Due to the viscoelastic behavior of the periodontal ...

Enhancement of Mechanical Strength from Preconditioning Varies in Ligaments and Tendons

Introduction: Ligaments and tendons are frequently injured soft tissue structures in sports activities. A common procedure to prevent athletes from ligaments and tendons injuries is warming-up and stretching prior to activities. This preconditioning recommended by most clinicians is believed to reduce the risk of injuries [1, 2]. A recent study further suggested that the preconditioning with cy...
